National Conference Sunday morning workshops

University workshops
A : One on-site 2-hour workshop
- Using your Digital Camera - Led by Terry Hewlett (2 hours)
Terry proposes to start from the basics, i.e. camera functions and what they do. He will cover digital capture and elements of composition to help people improve their images. He will happily structure the workshop to whatever experience and abilities you may have. Terry Hewlett was trained as a commercial photographer at Reading College of Art, where he won a Royal Society of Arts Bursary award. Four years ago he set up a website as a successful wedding photographer. His considerable photographic experience ranges from pro golf tournaments to portraits and commercial work. This year he has been invited to do courses for the Royal Photographic Society. Please bring your camera
- Rag Rugs Workshop - led by Sue Crisp (2 hours)
Rag rugs, cushions and wall hangings are all the rage. Not just rags; they can be made from
plastic bags, crisp packets and sweet wrappers. What a good way to recycle!
Sue Crisp is the leader of a group from Oxford, who meet every month. Why not join this
Workshop of "Happy Hookers", learn the skills and make you own masterpiece! (If possible,
please bring some scraps of material, but materials will be available.)
- Circus Skills Workshop Led by Dave Moran (2 hours)
Lovely Jugglies will be providing a Circus Skills workshop with a taste of all the circus arts,
with juggling equipment and circus props. If you have never learned to juggle, now is your
chance! Have you ever wondered how hard it is to ride on one wheel? Dave Moran will
help you to find the circus art that is right for you, in an informal and relaxed session.
Lovely Jugglies will attempt to take you on a fun journey through the circus arts.
The session will include all manner of circus foolishness and you are promised two hours
of fun and laughter.
- Knitting Workshop - led by Sue Bradley (2 hours)
In this 2 hour workshop we will be exploring and experimenting with an exciting variety
of hand knit stitches and techniques. You will be encouraged to use unusual yarns and materials and to be really creative with hand knitting. You will be able to work with wire, paper yarn, raffia, bamboo, natural and synthetic fibres and trims, and go home with a 'sampler' of your experimental knitting. Anyone from beginner to expert will enjoy this workshop!! Techniques as follows:
- knitting with buttons and beads
- openwork stitches
- graph work
- combining knit with fabrics
Please bring some knitting needles. Yarn will be provided. Sue Bradley has been a knitwear designer for over 25 years and runs the BA (Hons) Creative Arts Textiles module at Bath Spa University, as well as producing her own Collection. For further information see www.bradleyandralph.com
B. 1-hour on-site workshops: Choose 2 workshops in section B + 2 alternative choices
- Jane Austen Dance Workshop - led by Diana White - (1 hour)
Diana will be demonstrating country dances of the Jane Austen period. She will teach basic
dances in groups of 4 in longways sets. You will have a good time, laugh and learn
movements that can be carried on to country dancing or Scottish dancing.
Please wear soft shoes/ballet shoes.
- Craft Workshop - led by Carol Brotherton (1 hour)
Create a contemporary fabric brooch from a variety of fabrics to suit any occasion you wish.
All materials will be supplied. A chance to indulge your imagination and there should be
plenty of inspiration. An ability to thread a sewing needle and be able to sew various bits
together is the only skill required. Carol is well known for her artistic skills (in different
media) in the Bath area. She is a member of the Bath NWR and has shared her many creative skills within the group.
- The Future of Water - led by Mike Knight (1 hour)
This workshop will explore the issues around water, both present and future. Water - do we
take it for granted? Could power struggles of the future be based on water?
Come and find out where our water comes from now and the challenges involved in satisfying
the demands of the future. Mike was a water supply scientist with Wessex Water and will introduce various aspects associated with water, answer your questions and generate lively discussions.
- Yoga - led by Frank Davies - (1 hour)
An introduction to basic yoga postures and breathing techniques for shoulders, back problems and relaxation. Open to all ages and abilities, as all postures are taught with variations suitable for different levels of flexibility. Students should wear loose comfortable clothing and have bare feet.
Frank Davies moved from Bristol to Bath over 20 years ago and has been working with shiatsu and yoga for 25 years making him one of the most experienced teachers in the West Country. He is well known for teaching with liveliness and enthusiasm. His aim is that you leave the classes not only well stretched and relaxed, but with a smile!
- 'THE PAINTED FACE' - Cosmetics in the 18th Century - led by Geraldine Marchant (1 hour)
This illustrated talk on cosmetics in the eighteenth century will show their use by the elite
and demi-monde of that period. A 'cosmetick'd strumpet' will be among you, and there will
be a display of beauty aids for you to examine and, if you dare, try for yourselves!
- Crystals/Dowsing and Homeopathy - led by Phillipa - (1 hour)
Holistic therapies can be used to complement and enhance your quality of life. Phillipa is a
qualified practitioner in complementary therapies including massage, aromatherapy, reiki,
crystal therapy and dowsing. She will demonstrate how she uses crystals for relaxation
and energizing the body and will answer questions on any of the above therapies.
C. Off-Site Morning Workshops
- A Ramble - led by Diana Wood
Bath Sky-line Walk. Excellent views of the City from the limestone hills above Bath.
(3-4 miles). Wear trainers or walking shoes.
- A Guided Walking Tour of Historic Bath - led by Patrick Wood
From the Romans to the 21st century. Come and join a Mayor of Bath's Honorary Guide
on a gentle walking tour of the City centre, taking in the famous spots and the parts the
history books don't mention. (Starting point from the Tourist Information Centre),
Kingston Parade at 10.15 am)
D. Free Morning Around Bath
- The American Museum is just a 10 minute walk from the University. Set in
spectacular grounds with stunning views. The museum comprises a series of diverse
and authentically furnished rooms, which trace the American way of life from the early
settlers through to the 1860's. The special exhibition for 2008 is 'The Titanic'. Entry price is £5.00
- Swimming at the University - The Olympic sized pool is available to anyone
wishing to get some exercise. Opens from 9 am. Cost £3.00
- You may just want to explore Bath at your leisure. A leaflet giving information about some of the places of interest will be available at the conference information desk
- Bath Abbey - Matins 11 am
- St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, South Parade, Bath 10am
