The National Womens Register: Space to be you A place for talk

Women in Winter – lively discussions heat things up...

National Women’s Register keeps friendships glowing...

Winter may signal a chill in the air but the warmth generated by the good friends in NWR groups just seems to grow as the year draws on. The first real sign that winter is here is the annual countrywide quiz – by telephone!
This unique Telephone Treasure Trail (TTT) has been going since 1995. One group volunteers to set a quiz and the NWR Office distribute the questions on a carefully rotating system to allow about 100 groups per night to take part. Each group is given a single clue and a phone number. When they puzzle out the answer they ring the contact to give the answer and pick up the next clue. So, the challenge is: first find the theme, then work out all 20 answers, get through on the phone to confirm your answers all within the 2 hour limit. Post off your answer sheet the very next day to enter the big draw. There are four separate sets of prizes – one for the best group on each night.
Frantic phone calls, gales of laughter, shrieks of ‘Oh do keep quiet!’ can all be heard over the phones as the closing time approaches. Groups are encouraged to avoid using the Internet – this is seen as ‘too easy’, and is not a great deal of use in deciphering cryptic clues!
So far 2009 promises the national Conference – in Leeds – on ‘Leading the Way...’. A themed year follows highlighting The Industrial Revolution; in February a themed evening on Thailand offers opportunities for food and discussions. There are also Area Meetings - on Antarctica, Suf-fragettes and The Psychology of Love amongst other things. A Day conference on Revolutionaries and Lunarticks, and a singing workshop as well – just to keep those voices tuned and ready.
Talking and discussing. Just look at the variety of things NWR has to offer to keep its members involved and busy. Companionship and shared experiences provide an instant network of new contacts and potential lifelong friends.
So, if you are a lively minded woman, feeling in need of company, friendship and stimulation just ring: 0845 450 0287 or E-mail: office@nwr.org.uk. Make sure you are a member in time for all the events and occasions of 2009, and be there for 2010 – NWR’s Golden Anniversary...
