Central Region Diamond Day lunch
Date: Wed 26 Feb 2020 00:00.
Hi to all the Groups and Individual Members in our Central Region
We would like to invite you to join us in Birmingham to celebrate the 60 year Anniversary of NWR. Have a look at our history on the NWR website https://www.nwr.org.uk/about/test-timeline
In February 1960 Betty Jerman wrote an article in the 'Mainly for Women' page of The Manchester Guardian entitled 'Squeezed like Sardines in Suburbia.'
“This example of suburbia is an incredibly dull place to live in and I blame the women: they stay here all day; they set the tone ... Home and child-minding can have a blunting effect on a woman's mind. But only she can sharpen it.”
This inspired our founder Maureen Nicol, a young Cheshire housewife, to respond saying
“Since having my first baby I have been constantly surprised how women seem to go into voluntary exile in the home once they leave their outside work… Perhaps housebound wives with liberal interests and a desire to remain individuals could form a national register so that whenever one moves, one could contact like-minded friends.”
Maureen was inundated with replies to her letter and the The Liberal-minded Housebound Housewives’ Register was born. It soon became The Housebound Housewives’ Register. In 1966 the name was changed to The National Housewives' Register and in 1987 to The National Women's Register.
In 1995 Maureen Nicol was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to women by founding the organisation.
In 2010 we celebrated our Golden Anniversary by presenting Maureen with two books of members thanks and memories, a golden rose and a wonderful cake!
She is still a member of the Kenilworth Group so ten years on, all around the country, NWR ladies are gathering together and having a Diamond Day celebration exactly 60 years from the day that Maureen Nicol's letter was published in The Manchester Guardian. We have a lot to thank her for and if she is unable to join us we hope there will be a recorded interview shown at the lunch as well as a live link up with other groups around the country.
We are also having Ginny Davis to entertain us after lunch with her talk 'To the Fringe and Beyond', about her change of career from a Barrister to a full time writer and performer. Have a look at her website if you want to know more about her - the feedback is all excellent and we think she will be an enjoyable and amusing end to our special day! https://www.ginnydavis.com/
The Venue is right opposite the exit from New Street Station so coming by train will be really easy. Look for the Stephenson Street exit from the Ground Floor of the station. You can get into the hotel through The Burlington Arcade which has entrances from New Street and Stephenson Street itself – watch out for the trams!
Here are a couple of maps which might help orientate yourselves!
